Which Region Should You Choose for a Destination Wedding in Italy?

There is no single “best” region — there is the right one for your wedding
When an international couple decides to get married in Italy, one of the first questions is often: Where should we get married?
The answer, however, should not simply be “Tuscany,” “Puglia,” or “the Amalfi Coast.”
Italy offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes, atmospheres, traditions and wedding venues. The region you choose can influence not only the aesthetic of your wedding, but also logistics, guest experience, budget and the overall rhythm of your wedding weekend.
That is why, when deciding which region to choose for a destination wedding in Italy, it is important to start with a much simpler question:
What kind of experience do you want to create?
Do you imagine a celebration surrounded by countryside? A historic villa? A wedding by the sea? A medieval village? An intimate and relaxed wedding weekend? An authentic destination away from Italy's most crowded tourist areas?
The right region should be the one that allows your wedding to express all of this in the most natural way.

How do you choose the right region for a destination wedding in Italy?
Before you start saving venues on Pinterest or Instagram, it is worth considering a few fundamental elements.
Your choice of region should take into account:
the landscape and atmosphere you want
the time of year
your number of guests
how easy the destination is to reach
distance from airports
accommodation options
the type of wedding weekend you want to create
your overall investment
the architecture and character of the venues
the experiences you would like to offer your guests
These elements are closely connected.
A region may be perfect for a countryside wedding but less suitable if you want all your guests to reach the venue easily without renting a car.
Another destination may have beautiful historic villas but not be the right choice if your dream is a wedding by the sea.
The question, therefore, is not simply “Where would we like to get married?”
It is also: “Which destination will allow our wedding to work beautifully?”
Le Marche: for couples looking for authentic, elegant and less crowded Italy
Le Marche is one of the destinations I particularly recommend to international couples who want to experience an authentic, refined and less predictable side of Italy.
The region offers an extraordinary variety of landscapes: rolling hills, vineyards, historic villages, private estates, elegant villas and the Adriatic coast.
One of its greatest strengths is precisely this variety.
You can create a wedding surrounded by countryside and panoramic hills, or move closer to the coast and create an entirely different experience.
Le Marche can be particularly appealing to couples who:
want a destination that feels less touristy than Italy's most famous wedding regions;
love countryside and rolling landscapes;
are looking for venues with character and authenticity;
want to offer their guests a less predictable Italian experience;
want to combine their wedding with great food, wine and local experiences.
For international guests, it can also be an opportunity to discover a side of Italy they may never have considered visiting.
This combination of authenticity, elegance and the freedom to create something highly personal is what makes Le Marche particularly interesting for an Italy destination wedding.

Umbria: for a wedding weekend surrounded by the Italian countryside
Umbria is a natural choice for couples who imagine their wedding surrounded by greenery, rolling hills and a more intimate atmosphere.
The region is known for historic villages, castles, monasteries, private estates and countryside resorts.
For many international couples, one of its greatest advantages is the possibility of turning the wedding into a true wedding weekend.
Guests can stay at the same property or nearby, share dinners and informal moments, and experience the destination without constantly having to move from one place to another.
Umbria can be particularly suitable if you are looking for:
an elegant but not overly formal wedding;
a venue surrounded by nature;
an intimate and relaxed atmosphere;
a weekend centred around food and togetherness;
local food and wine experiences;
a slower pace for you and your guests.
It is also an interesting destination for couples who want their celebration to feel deeply connected to its surroundings without necessarily choosing one of Italy's most crowded wedding destinations.

Romagna: when the sea and conviviality become part of the wedding
Romagna offers a distinctly different identity.
Here, the relationship with the sea, food, hospitality and conviviality can become an integral part of the wedding experience.
For couples looking for a relaxed, informal but beautifully curated celebration, the possibility of combining the wedding with time on the Adriatic coast can be particularly appealing.
Imagine an informal welcome dinner, a day at the beach with your closest friends and family, followed by an elegant celebration in a historic venue or a countryside estate.
Romagna can work particularly well for couples who do not want the wedding to be limited to a single day, but instead want to create several opportunities to spend time together throughout the weekend.
It is especially worth considering if you value:
the sea;
food and conviviality;
a relaxed atmosphere;
the possibility of creating several events during the wedding weekend;
a combination of countryside and coast;
an enjoyable experience for guests who want to extend their stay.

Abruzzo: nature, authenticity and unexpected landscapes
Abruzzo is a destination that can genuinely surprise international couples.
The region offers mountains, national parks, historic villages, rolling hills and coastline, creating very different settings within the same territory.
It is an interesting choice for couples looking for an authentic destination and wanting to move away from the more predictable Italian wedding routes.
An Abruzzo wedding can have a very distinctive character precisely because the region offers so many different possibilities.
You might imagine a celebration surrounded by nature, a historic venue, a countryside wedding or an experience connected to the coast.
For guests travelling from the United States, the UK or Australia, it can also become a genuine discovery.
They are not simply attending a wedding in Italy.
They are experiencing a part of Italy they may never have considered visiting before.

What about Italy's most famous wedding destinations?
When people think about destination weddings in Italy, it is natural to think immediately of Tuscany, Puglia, Lake Como, the Amalfi Coast or Venice.
These are beautiful destinations with very good reasons for their international reputation.
But “more famous” does not necessarily mean “more suitable.”
A well-known destination can have significant advantages, but it can also come with higher demand, limited venue availability and, during certain periods, a greater number of tourists.
For some couples, this is not a problem at all.
For others, discovering a less familiar region and creating a more private and personal experience can be much more appealing.
The right choice depends on what you want — not on what is most popular on Instagram.
How do you choose between the coast, countryside and city?
One of the first decisions to make is the type of environment in which you want to experience your wedding.
Here is a simple question that can help:
When you imagine your wedding weekend, what do you see around you?
If you see rolling hills, vineyards, olive trees and a long dinner table outdoors, a countryside destination may be the natural choice.
If you imagine the sea, sunset dinners and relaxed days on the coast, you should focus on coastal regions.
If you dream of art, architecture, museums and an urban atmosphere, an Italian city may be more appropriate.
There is no right answer.
There is only the answer that best reflects the wedding you want to experience.
The season should also influence your choice
The same region can offer completely different experiences depending on the time of year.
A summer wedding on the coast can be spectacular, but it requires careful consideration of temperatures and timings.
An autumn wedding in the countryside can create an entirely different atmosphere, with seasonal colours, food and landscapes.
Spring and early autumn can also be appealing for couples who prefer milder temperatures and an experience that is less tied to the peak summer season.
Before choosing a region, consider:
What time of year do we enjoy most?
What kind of weather would we like on our wedding day?
How flexible are we with our wedding date?
What would we like our guests to do during their stay?
Does the venue we love work particularly well during that season?
The season should not be considered separately from the destination.
The two decisions need to work together.
What about your guests? Their experience matters too
With a destination wedding, you are not choosing a region only for yourselves.
Of course, the final decision is yours, but it is important to consider the experience of the people travelling to celebrate with you.
If your guests are coming from several different countries, accessibility can become an important factor.
This does not necessarily mean choosing the destination closest to a major international airport.
It means understanding how much time and organisation will be required to reach the venue.
A longer journey can absolutely be worthwhile if it leads to an extraordinary experience.
The important thing is that it should be an intentional choice.
That is why, when I evaluate a destination with a couple, I look beyond the venue itself. I also consider how guests will get there, where they will stay and what they can experience while they are in Italy.
The region should become part of your wedding story
One of the things I love most about destination weddings is the opportunity to make the destination part of the story.
It does not have to be simply the backdrop for your photographs.
The local area can become part of the wedding through the menu, wine, flowers, music, guest activities, stationery and even the pace of the celebration.
A couple choosing Le Marche might highlight the rolling countryside and local cuisine.
A couple choosing Umbria might create a wedding weekend surrounded by the Italian countryside.
In Romagna, the sea and conviviality can become part of the experience.
In Abruzzo, nature and the authenticity of the region can create an entirely different atmosphere.
This is what makes a destination wedding truly personal:
You are not simply bringing your wedding to Italy. You are creating a wedding that makes sense in Italy.
Which region should you choose for your destination wedding in Italy?
There is no definitive ranking of the best Italian regions for a wedding.
There is a destination that is better suited to your guest count, style, investment (Discover "how much does a wedding in Italy cost"), season and, above all, the experience you want to create.
Before choosing a region, I recommend starting with these five questions:
How do we want to feel during our wedding weekend?
What experience do we want to create for our guests?
Which landscape feels most like us as a couple?
How far are we comfortable asking our guests to travel?
Which destination still feels special to us beyond current wedding trends?
The answers can narrow down your search considerably.
And sometimes they can lead you towards a destination you had never initially considered.
Why working with a local wedding planner can make a difference
When planning a wedding from abroad, knowing a region means much more than knowing which venues exist.
It means understanding the territory, real travel times, the characteristics of different properties, the vendors who work there, logistical possibilities and even the differences between one area and another.
A wedding planner with first-hand knowledge of the destination can help you understand whether a place you have discovered online is genuinely suitable for your wedding — or whether there is another destination that could work even better.
This is where my work begins: not recommending a destination because it is fashionable, but finding the place that makes sense for you.
I work primarily with international couples planning weddings in Le Marche, Romagna, Umbria and Abruzzo — four regions that offer extraordinary opportunities for elegant, personal and authentically Italian destination weddings.
