Weekday wedding in Italy: why more couples are choosing to marry during the week

Saturday is no longer the only option
For many years weddings were almost automatically associated with Saturdays.
It simply seemed like the easiest choice: guests are usually free from work and travel arrangements are easier to manage.
However, in recent years many american and foreign couples planning getting married in Italy have started to consider a different option: a weekday wedding.
At first the idea might feel unusual. But especially when it comes to destination weddings in Italy, celebrating during the week is becoming increasingly common.
Why more couples are choosing a weekday wedding in Italy
There are several reasons behind this choice.
One of the most practical ones is venue availability.
Historic villas, countryside estates and charming venues are often booked very quickly during the most popular months, especially for Saturdays.
Choosing a weekday wedding in Italy often means having greater flexibility with dates and sometimes access to venues that would otherwise be unavailable.
But it’s not only about logistics.
Many couples discover that a weekday celebration can create a more relaxed rhythm for the entire wedding experience.
A more relaxed pace for a destination wedding
When couples plan a destination wedding in Italy, the celebration is rarely limited to just a few hours.
Very often it becomes a multi-day experience:a welcome dinner, informal gatherings with friends, time to explore the surroundings.
In these situations, getting married on a Thursday or Friday can work surprisingly well.
Guests arrive gradually in the days before the wedding and then stay through the weekend, turning the celebration into a shared travel experience.
In several weddings I have planned in Le Marche, Umbria and Romagna, this approach created a very relaxed atmosphere: less rushing, more time to truly enjoy the moment together.
A different experience for guests
Another interesting aspect is how guests experience the wedding.
When people travel abroad to attend a wedding, they usually do so because they genuinely want to be there.
Taking a day or two off work often becomes part of the experience rather than a problem.
Many couples actually find that this makes the celebration even more meaningful:guests are not just attending a party, they are sharing a special moment of their lives in a unique place.
And this is one of the reasons why couples planning getting married in Italy increasingly consider the idea of a weekday wedding.
Italian regions that work beautifully for this type of celebration
The regions where I most often work — Le Marche, Romagna, Umbria and Abruzzo — are particularly well suited for this type of wedding.
These areas offer:
historic villages and charming towns
villas surrounded by rolling hills
landscapes between the sea and the mountains
intimate venues far from overcrowded tourist destinations
All of this makes it possible to create a wedding that feels less like a single event and more like a shared experience for everyone involved.
And when the celebration lasts several days, the fact that the ceremony takes place on a weekday becomes almost secondary.
A choice that should feel right for the couple
In recent years, many couples choosing a destination wedding in Italy are also rethinking other wedding traditions.
For example, some decide not to have a traditional bridal party or opt for a more intimate wedding with just a few guests.
Of course, a weekday wedding is not the perfect solution for everyone.
Some couples still prefer a Saturday wedding because it can make things easier for certain guests.
But for couples planning a destination wedding in Italy, it can definitely be worth considering this option.
As an Italy wedding planner, my role is always to help couples explore different possibilities and understand which choices truly fit their vision of the wedding.
Sometimes changing perspective — even just a little — can open the door to a celebration that feels more relaxed, more personal and more meaningful.
Because in the end, a wedding date is not just a day on the calendar. It’s the way you choose to experience one of the most important moments of your life together.
