Micro Wedding in Italy or Minimony? Understanding Intimate Weddings

Not every couple dreams of a wedding with hundreds of guests.

For some, getting married means exactly the opposite: celebrating with only the people who matter most, having meaningful time with every guest and creating a wedding that feels personal, intimate and genuinely connected to who they are.

This is where concepts such as Micro Weddings, Minimonies and Elopements come in.

But are they really the same thing?

Not quite.

If you are considering a small wedding in Italy, understanding the difference between these formats can help you define the kind of experience you actually want to create — and, most importantly, the role you want your guests to have in it.

What does an intimate wedding really mean?

An intimate wedding is not necessarily defined by a specific number of guests.

It is first and foremost a different way of approaching the wedding experience.

It means choosing to celebrate with a smaller group of people and giving more space to relationships, meaningful conversations and the quality of the time you spend together.

With an intimate wedding, you can:

  • spend more time with each of your guests;

  • choose a smaller, more characterful venue;

  • create a highly considered design even with a limited guest list;

  • organise several experiences before and after the wedding day;

  • turn the wedding into something you experience together, rather than simply a party that lasts a few hours.

And this is what I find most interesting about intimate weddings.

A smaller wedding is not necessarily a “lesser” wedding.

It can simply be more focused on what matters most to you.

Micro Wedding, Minimony or Elopement: what is the difference?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but they can describe quite different experiences.

There is no universal definition for any of them, especially when it comes to guest numbers.

The meaning is often more useful when you look at how the wedding is experienced, rather than simply counting the people around the table.

Minimony: a very intimate celebration

A Minimony is, quite literally, a “mini ceremony”.

The term became particularly popular in recent years, but the concept can be broader than simply having a smaller ceremony.

A minimony can be chosen by a couple who wants to celebrate their marriage with only a handful of people while still giving the occasion the same care and importance they would give to a larger wedding.

It could be:

  • a complete wedding celebration with a very small guest list;

  • an intimate ceremony followed by a dinner;

  • a smaller celebration now, followed by a larger party at a later date;

  • a conscious choice for a couple who simply prefers a more private wedding.

The important question is therefore not only how many people are attending, but what role the celebration has within the couple's overall wedding plans.

Micro Wedding: a complete wedding with a carefully selected guest list

A Micro Wedding in Italy is still a full wedding, but with a deliberately limited number of guests.

There is no universal guest count that defines a micro wedding.

Some couples may have 10 guests, others 20, 30 or more. What matters is that the scale of the celebration allows the couple to genuinely experience the wedding together with their guests.

A micro wedding can include:

  • a civil, religious or symbolic ceremony;

  • cocktails and aperitivo;

  • a seated dinner;

  • live music;

  • floral design and styling;

  • dancing and a party;

  • a welcome dinner or other experiences before and after the wedding day.

In other words, micro does not mean simple.

A micro wedding can be sophisticated, highly designed and filled with meaningful experiences.

Elopement: when the wedding is primarily an experience for two

An Elopement is an even more intimate format.

Traditionally, the word referred to a couple running away to get married, but today it is more commonly used for a wedding where the couple chooses to experience the celebration primarily as something personal and private.

There may be no guests at all, or only a very small number of people, such as witnesses or immediate family members.

The key difference from a micro wedding is therefore the role of the guests.

In a micro wedding, guests are an important part of the experience.

In an elopement, the focus is primarily on the couple and the experience they are sharing together.

Micro Wedding or Minimony: which one is right for you?

There is no universally better option.

The right format depends on how you want to experience your wedding.

Start by asking yourselves:

  1. Who do we genuinely want to have with us on this day?

  2. Do we want our guests to be an integral part of the celebration?

  3. Would we like to spend more than one day with them?

  4. Do we want a proper wedding reception and party, or something more intimate?

  5. Do we imagine the wedding primarily as an experience for the two of us, or as something we want to share closely with the people we love?

Your answers will probably tell you more than any definition ever could.

A small wedding does not automatically mean a lower budget

This is one of the biggest misconceptions surrounding small weddings in Italy.

Having fewer guests can certainly reduce costs directly related to guest numbers, such as catering, drinks and some types of rentals.

But it does not automatically mean having a low-budget wedding.

In fact, many couples deliberately choose a smaller guest list so that they can invest more in the quality of the overall experience.

With fewer guests, for example, you may decide to invest more in:

  • a distinctive wedding venue;

  • a sophisticated floral design;

  • an exceptional dinner;

  • photography and videography that truly reflect your style;

  • live music;

  • guest experiences;

  • a welcome dinner or day-after celebration;

  • accommodation and transportation for your guests;

  • personalised details throughout the wedding.

The guest count therefore changes how you allocate your investment, not necessarily the value of the wedding you want to create.

Why choose an intimate wedding?

The reason should not simply be that intimate weddings are fashionable.

An intimate wedding makes sense when it reflects the way you genuinely want to experience this important moment.

For some couples, it means avoiding a large, highly structured celebration.

For others, it means inviting only the people with whom they have a truly meaningful relationship.

And for others, it means having the freedom to create a wedding weekend and spend several days together rather than just a few hours on the wedding day.

This is one of the reasons why a Micro Wedding in Italy can be so appealing.

A Micro Wedding in Italy can become a multi-day experience

When an international couple chooses to get married in Italy, their guests are already travelling for the occasion.

So why limit the experience to a single day?

A small wedding can become an intimate wedding weekend:

Day 1 — Welcome

Guests arrive, check in and meet for an aperitivo or welcome dinner.

Day 2 — Wedding Day

Ceremony, cocktails, dinner and celebration.

Day 3 — Day After

Brunch, a pool party, lunch in the countryside, a visit to a nearby village or simply a relaxed day together.

You do not need to organise all of these moments.

The important thing is to choose the experiences that genuinely make sense for you and your guests.

That is the difference between simply organising a small wedding and designing an intimate wedding experience.

Where can you have a small wedding in Italy?

A smaller guest list opens up possibilities that can be more difficult to manage with a large wedding.

You might consider a private villa, a charming agriturismo, a boutique hotel, a historic residence, a former monastery, a country estate or even an entire small village.

But the venue should always be chosen according to the experience you want to create.

For an intimate wedding in Italy, for example, you might look for a place where your guests can:

  • stay on the property or nearby;

  • share some of the wedding weekend with you;

  • experience the landscape and local culture;

  • move between different spaces for the ceremony, dinner and more informal moments;

  • feel that they are part of a private and meaningful experience.

Le Marche, Romagna, Umbria and Abruzzo offer many possibilities for this kind of celebration, from historic residences and countryside estates to charming villages and intimate hospitality venues.

The real luxury of an intimate wedding? Time.

Perhaps this is the reason so many couples are drawn to smaller weddings.

The real advantage is not necessarily having fewer tables, fewer flowers or fewer guests.

It is having more time.

More time to talk to your parents.

More time to hug a friend who has travelled across the world to be there.

More time to sit around the table and actually enjoy your dinner.

More time to laugh with your guests during the welcome dinner.

More time to experience the day you have spent so long imagining.

And that is what can make an intimate wedding so incredibly special.

Micro Wedding, Minimony or Elopement: what experience do you want?

Do not choose a definition simply because it is currently popular.

Start with yourselves.

Think about who you want beside you.

Think about how much time you want to spend with your guests.

Think about how you imagine the wedding day — and, perhaps even more importantly, how you want to feel when it is over.

Whether you choose a Micro Wedding, a Minimony or an Elopement, the most important thing is that the format reflects who you are.

Because an intimate wedding is not simply a smaller version of a traditional wedding.

It is a different way of experiencing the celebration.

And that is precisely what can make it so personal.
